Simon Green Atkins Statue
A statue of university founder Simon Green Atkins was unveiled during the 2005 Homecoming festivities. Since then, his likeness has stood tall and proud as part of the pedestrian walkway in the center of campus. Earline H. King, an internationally-known sculptor and Winston-Salem native, created the work.
In an interview in the WSSU student newspaper the News Argus, the 92-year old King explained that she was honored to create the likeness of Simon Green Atkins. “In every picture, Atkins stands so erect, and he's dressed magnificently. His clothes were impeccable. He had that jaunty, chin-up look all the time…We should be grateful for all that he has done for the university and for the community.”
